If you visit Slovakia it is probably best to find accomodation in Bratislava. If you have seen most of the historical town, done the shopping and want to make a short trip somewhere to countryside you should consider wine region of Malé Karpaty. Lot of wineyards, beautiful castle of Smolenice and interesting Cave Driny (Jaskyňa Driny), the only one open for public in western part of Slovakia. This dripstone cave offers more than half kilometer long pathway full of roe-stone beauty. It is accessible by foot (5 min walk) from small village Jahodník. Guided tours always start at XX:00 but it is always better to book beforehand if you want to enter in larger groups. Do not to forget your jackets and long trousers even in summer because there is only 7-8 C degrees (46F) in the cave.
History of the cave Driny
Although the population of this area new about the whole in 19th century, J. Babič and I. Vajsábel entered the 35 meter deep chimney only in 30s of 20th century. Initially explorable 175 metres were expanded in 1959.
Interesting sculptures and formations
During your guided tour you can let go wild your fantasy and imagination. You will have chance to see elephant and rabbit ears, troll, king Svätopluk with his 3 sons and a sheep. You will be choleing about sad story of crying bride, you might spot a 3-legged goose, turtle and lot of other unusual rock formations.
Jaskyňa driny – usefull information
Tours start during summer every hour from 9.00 till 16.00. Minimal number of attendees should be 4 and do not forget that the cave is closed on Monday.
